When a Loved One Builds Their Dream Home

Let me tell you the single best decision you can make when building a new house. Hire the right architect. A lot of people settle on buying a pre-planned home, but what’s a home about anyway? A home is a place where you can feel comfortable, where you spend a lot of your waking hours, and were you feel like, well, home.

My dad had this experience recently. He had never used an architect in the past but when he finally retired last year he knew it was finally time to build the house of this dreams. He had lived in the country as a kid on a small farm. Ever since he had lived in multiple city homes, with the homes situated close together. He had grown tired of the city live, wanted to live on a few acres, have a garden, and watch the sunset.

He contacted a local friend, who was an architect, to help him make his dreams a reality. He had my brother and I and wanted to have four bedrooms in his new home. He had dreamed about having dinners out on a covered screen in porch, a large garage, lots of land to have a garden and keep mowed and just enjoy retirement. The architect knew what he was looking for and within about two weeks time had some plan drawings for my dad to review. He loved the architect’s creativity and mastery of his craft. There were lots of unique features including many archways, great utilization of space, an open plan home, and even a rooster wind vane at the peak of the garage to give the country home feel.

After only a couple revisions the house was complete and approved. My dad couldn’t contain his excitement. He could already feel himself inside his new home and making lasting memories to come. He was already planning the future family get togethers and where we’d play basketball games outside.

Some things about the house weren’t revealed until the house started construction. The framers were experts and quickly turned the house layout into 3D form. It was quite the experience walking through the vertical studs of the house and imagining living within its walls. There was a hidden alcove above the door and an expertly crafted gable roof. As the house transitioned first through drywall and into cabinetry the house was really feeling personal.

My dad made visits many days of the week to check on progress and he would eagerly tell the family about each days progress. After the cabinetry, came the paint, and the wood floors and finally the carpet and furniture.

These are the types of things that only an architect designed house can achieve. You can buy a pre-planned house and skill enjoy the house but there will always be compromises and things you wish were different. With an architect you can take your time and only approve the design when the house is exactly the way you want. After all, why not spend the years of your life in the home of your dreams?
